I've always appreciated sailboats and anything that's associated with them. They have been my passion every since I used to be a child.
The very first model sailboats I had were big and vibrant. They weren't really made following a specific vessel, neither did they keep a defined scale. They were intended to be toys and amuse me, not a real representation of a vessel. Those model sailboats were produced of plastic that was resistant against bad treatment. The sails were made of the similar type of inexpensive plastic that supermarket hand bags are produced of, so that they could be simply changed if torn. And boy, did I tear mine a lot.
As I grew up, I began to collect more genuine design sailboats, which were centered on the sailboats I saw in the gulf that was near to where I lived. In contrast to my first model sailboats, these sailboats had a scale which they respected, in order to keep the ratios of a genuine sailboat. Those sailboats weren't they kind you needed to assemble; rather, they arrived already assembled and all set to play. I discovered later that most of these weren't intended to be put on water. Instead they came with a foundation and were intended to be put on display. That was a bizarre idea to me at the time, which resulted in a few of those model sailboats sinking and staying lost inside the bottom of the gulf.
I ultimately graduated from those model sailboats to the sort that I had to assemble and color myself. They were a blast, and I experienced a lot of fun using them. I began with simple versions and worked my way up to very complicated model sailboats that included small engines as well as some welding.
I suppose I must not have been that poor at the hobby, as my dad liked one of them so much, he put it on display on top of our fireplace. I was so happy with it, and I never forgot to casually point out it whenever somebody came to visit. It wasn't until then that I realized why several model sailboats were meant for display, and not for positioning them in the water.
My finest accomplishment was when I managed to build one that has been distant controlled. I suppose it was the very first sailboat in my maturity in which I enjoyed more having fun with, than assembling.
I don't assemble model sailboats nowadays. I lastly discovered a much more pricey hobby. I acquired myself a real sailboat, which takes significantly more of my time and cash that my model sailboats ever did.
