It is no mystery why people pay a few hundred dollars for an automatic litter box. Scooping and cleaning a cat box is pretty nasty, particularly with more than one pet cat in a house. There are lots of automatic litter boxes manufactured over the past decade, but many of them did not get great assessments. Some were unsafe and loud or they were more trouble than they were truly worth. Two of the more recent models have been terrific sellers in the pet supply marketplace, however. The Litter Robot actually appears like a small robot with a spherical head. The dome top has an entrance for the cat above a bit step which will switch on the system. The dome is filled with typical clumping litter, and this is actually where the cat will do his "business". Underneath is a holder lined with an ordinary kitchen trash bag. After the cat is done, Litter Robot sifts out the clumps and solid waste materials as well as deposits this into the bottom level plate.
While this is a costly bit of technology, Litter Robot uses regular store bought clumping litter and garbage tote bags, and it is much more conservative with litter. It should only use about half the amount standard boxes use over time. In the long run, one can save a bit of money by using it. There are downsides, however. This is a large unit that may not fit in all bathrooms. Unfortunately, it may be too intimidating for some cats and kittens or scare them. They are funny creatures and sometimes protest changes.
The Cat Genie is a little more complex in design. It looks a lot like a little toilet, only the bowl is filled with special granules instead of normal kitty litter. The cat uses the granules as usual, then the toilet "flushes" itself on a seven minute cycle. There is an automatic scoop that clears out solid waste, and the urine filters through the granules to the disposal rack underneath. The flushing action also cleans the bowl with a mixture contained in a special cartridge.
There are some negative points for Cat Genie as well. The unit must be hooked to a water source and an electrical outlet. For that reason it may be difficult for some to find a space appropriate for the machine. Cat Genie also demands special granules and cleaning cartridges, which can become a financial burden over time. As with the other system, there is still the possibility of the cat rejecting the unit and refusing to use it.
Automatic litter boxes are great time savers, and they allow people to avoid the nastiness of cat waste as much as possible. For this reason alone many are willing to invest a chunk of change in the technology.
This Litter Robot review is quite positive generally with the only recurring complaint being its dimension. Cat Genie has good feedback except for the cost and annoyance of the extra accessories and the need for a water hook-up. In the end, the cats are likely to have the last say since they are the ones who will choose whether they actually use the new gadget.
